Hi, I’m Skylar Slaughter-Murphy.
Education has always been my passion, along with a firm belief in the power of caring relationships. Caring relationships and adults advocating for my success are the primary reasons I am where I am today. The majority of the methods I use in my trainings and workshops are methods I employed as a classroom teacher and assistant principal. These methods allowed me to build lasting relationships with my students and their parents and create learning atmospheres that fostered warmth, safety, and achievement. I went on to receive several peer-nominated awards due to the impact of these methods on my practices. I say that because I want you to know that these methods work and people took notice.
Time and again I have been asked how my students were so well-behaved, how I got certain students to do certain things, how this ‘underperforming’ student was now performing, or why my parent engagement was so high, and it all goes back to caring. Caring enough to build relationships, caring enough to put rules and procedures in place and set high expectations, caring enough to form relationships with parents. Taking the time to care for your students is one of the most important things you can do as an educator. It is the basis for classroom management, student success, parental engagement, and truly everything you do in the classroom.
I am now in higher education and still make time to care for my college students. I have had students tell me that the fact that I took time to build a relationship with them is the reason they stayed in school. Our students need us to care. There is power in caring.
